Spring has Sprung!

Posted by on March 7, 2010
The weather couldn’t have been better this weekend to get out and do some fishing. My original plan was to head up to the driftless area Saturday morning, fish all day and stay the night to get another morning of fishing in before returning to work Sunday evening. Things didn’t work out quite as planned, but the change in plans happened to work out in my favor. I did make it to the driftless area Saturday and the weather was great and fishing was steady, but I was unable to stay the night in Wisconsin to fish the spring creeks again. Since I had planned on fishing Sunday morning, and my buddy Adam had mentioned he was headed up to Milwaukee to play with his new spey rod, I decided to join him. I figured it would be a great opportunity to pull out my new switch rod and take it for a spin. Being new to spey casting, I spent the first hour just trying to get comfortable with a cast or two before I started to cover some water. After I felt that I could present my fly to the fish the way that I wanted, I headed for a fresh spot. I arrived at a promising run with a green butt skunk tied on and swung it through a dozen times or so before I switched to the trusty ol’ string leech. A few swings in and WHAM! Steelhead on!! It was an aggressive take, but the dark red buck was still feeling the chill of winter and didn’t put up the fight you expect from steelhead. Either way it was very exciting to break in the new rod with my first steelhead of the year, and feel the sun on my face for a couple days doing what I love……Fishing.
