More Brown

Posted by on November 17, 2013

I swung a lot of the Milwaukee yesterday and my favorite run finally coughed up a real nice Brown while it was raining just after noon.  The fishing seems  to be a little slow this year which is surprising because we’ve had a good amount of rain to push fish up the river.  Maybe it’s just me.  The last few weeks have treated other fisherman I know pretty well but there’s been a lot more skunks in general thus far.

Nice fish and nice reports brother. Thanks for taking the time to post. I was looking around to see is ANYONE has posted anything on the river conditions. I was up last Friday and fished a few hours before heading back to Chicago. I only fished Kletsch park (my first time fishing the river actually) but I am thinking of trying it in the morning to see if i can convince a few fish to nibble. I have never fished any other spots but I think I may try downstream. I’m a nymph guy this season but am extremely anxious to get into swinging. Maybe I’ll see you out there on Friday. If my wife doesn’t divorce me. Cheers, and tight lines. rnDolan

Thanks a lot. Last Saturday was really nice with above average flows (perfect for swinging) at around 350 cfs and about 28″ of visibility (before it rained). I’m curious how much the River will come down by this weekend. We just got a lot of rain and it’s flowing at 650 cfs right now and will probably be around 600 cfs this weekend. There’s a few wider stretches that swing well and some deep slow pools that come alive around 600 cfs. If you’re new to the river just know 240 cfs is about the average flow for this time of year and the river will be high and fast in a lot of places this weekend. I encourage you to check out the lower river anywhere between Hampton & North Ave. The Root River will finally be in play this weekend and it is a very good river for nymphing. Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions about the Milwaukee or Root.

Hi, Andrew,rnThanks for putting together this blog, good stuff. I’m thinking about trying the Milwaukee River the weekend of Thanksgiving. May go out Thursday or Friday. Any suggestions on the best time – seems like early morning works best. Also, if I’m targeting brown and steelheads, what should I be tossing out there? Also, I was thinking about starting at the Kletsch Park, is that smart this time of year?rnThanks for your help!

I can’t take the credit. My buddy Anthony Rosati started this blog a few years ago and recently I’ve been helping with Admin and posts. I’ll send you an e-mail with my thoughts.

Hey Derek and Andrew, rnI’m headed up to the Milwaukee on Friday as well. Maybe I’ll see you out there. We might be crazy but at least we will avoid the shoppers and get to stand in a (albeit freezing) river for a bit, and maybe get a shot at a trout or two. I’m going to be rolling up there for an art show, so I’ll be the dude driving the huge white sprinter van. Come say hey. rnCheers, rnDolan

I must admit I didn’t make it up on Black Friday as planned. I’ve had my eye on this little warm up and managed to get Tuesday off this week. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for a white sprinter in the future.
