Bolster the Coaster

Posted by on December 4, 2014

Thinking about hitting the UP in the Spring so I’ve been reading up on Lake Run Brook Trout aka Coasters.  There really doesn’t seem to be a solid fishery anywhere for them in Michigan or Wisconsin but Canada and Minnesota have had some success.  Targeting them seems futile but it’s still nice knowing they can be a bonus fish.  That being said, I was happy to stumble onto this Michigan DNR article.  I also found a video on YouTube which highlights one of the reasons for their decline.  In the video you can see a pod of Brookies laying  next to sand which is now covering what used to be great spawning gravel.  Michigan Technological University made this video a few years ago to illustrate why money was needed to vacuum sand from essential spawning habitat for these beautiful native trout.
