More Spring Smallmouth Action

Another Smallmouth from my local haunt.  Possibly the same one from  the picture below.  This time my daughter had a front row seat!  IMG_2520[1]

IMG_1656With a short period of time to spare today I stopped at a favorite spot of mine close to home with my family and landed a nice largemouth and a really nice smallmouth.  This place is not just a favorite of mine because it’s close to home and has a lake with great largemouth fishing and a creek with equally great smallmouth fishing, but it’s where I grew up fishing and hunting with my dad, brother, cousins, grandpa, great uncles, and everyone else my family would invite to enjoy this piece of land that was tailor made for hunting and fishing.  Those memories have molded the person I am today, and I’m proud to have grown to appreciate the outdoors the way my elders have, and even prouder that I’m giving my kids the same memories in the same place.

The Early Spring Swing

With the early lock-up this Winter and late thaw this Spring, Cabin Fever has been all too real.  Not to mention, I’ve been stuck in mandatory training at work the last 6 weeks away from home due to my promotion, so I’ve been unable to sneak out and fish.  I was worried about the water clarity when I decided the Milwaukee was my best option and my worries were instantly put to rest when I got to the water…30″ of visibility is a very sexy stain.  The morning weather was dreary and misty…perfect Steelhead weather.  I swung with the big stick and sink tip where I could at 1050 cfs and went 2 for 3 with flashy and dark leech patterns.    The weather went south as each minute passed.  The day started calm and misty @ 43 degrees and ended with 35 mph gusts, sleet flurries, and wind chill in the low 20’s.  That being said, I’ve never been so glad to be fishing in shitty weather.

A Day in the Driftless

The last week or so the weather has finally started to resemble spring.  Saturday morning Andrew and I geared up and headed for the Driftless to get our first fix of the year on small stream trout.  Upon our arrival at the first creek we noticed the run-off had stained the water more than we had expected.  So, instead of trying our go-to nymph patterns and dry flies we decided the conditions were perfect for throwing some meat.  We both had success with woolly bugger variations so didn’t bother trying much else.  No big fish for the day but a few beautiful, wild browns were brought to hand, and a lucky few brookies fought their way to freedom before we got a photo.

MMSD Plans to remove barriers to fish passage in Menomonee River

It looks like Angler’s of the SW Tribs of WI might have some additional angling opportunities once the 5 barriers mentioned in the below link are removed.  The water quality increases further upstream and becomes less urban which is good news for the fish.  Spreading out fishing pressure and being able to fish less urban areas is a win for everyone, and most importantly the fish.
