Back In Colorado

My family and I headed back to colorful Colorado for a wedding last week and took a few extra days off to enjoy the Rockies while we were out there.  We got a lot accomplished in seven days.  We stayed with friends in Denver, family in Boulder, two nights with the wedding party in Estes Park, and then with more family in a cabin on the Big Thompson River.  The first day I was there Chase, my son Asher, and I took a ride down to the South Platte River near the small town of Deckers to do a little fishing while the ladies were doing their bachelorette party.  Having a two and a half year old limited the amount of water we could cover but we each managed some nice fish.

After a couple nights in Boulder the family and I took a trip up to Rocky Mountain National to hang out for a day.  We stopped on the way at a spot a friend had told me about right on the side of the highway and landed a few nice fish before we entered the park.  Once we got in the park we sat at a picnic table by the river and ate our lunch.  I was anxious to fish so I inhaled my sandwich and tossed out a beetle into a riffle.  Right away a had a nice brown trout doing the dance on the end of my line.  As soon as Asher saw that I had a fish on he yelled “is it big one, is it big one!?”.  As I landed the fished he would yell “hold it, hold it!”.  He took the brown trout with one hand and threw him back in the river.  The look on his face was priceless when he grabbed the trout, but he was just as excited as he said “by, by, fishy” and watched it swim away.

Here’s a few pics from Rocky Mountain National and the Big Thompson in the back yard of the cabin we rented.

Some of the nicest fish of the week were hooked right in my back yard!

Big Thompson River in Rocky Mountain National Park

Over the weekend I made it out west to Colorado for my cousins bachelor party, and had the chance to fish some good water with some great guys.  My cousin Chase and I have remained as close as brothers for as long as I could remember, and in two weeks he is tying the knot with his beautiful fiance in Colorado, where he has lived for the last 8 years.  When word of the bachelor party started getting around I knew my cousin was going to want some fishing in the mix.  So, Friday morning a group of us headed up to Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park to fish the Big Thompson River.  Fishing 8 guys on any river let alone the upper Big T can be a circus.  Amazingly, with all 8 of us moving together taking turns at each run or pool we all were very pleased with enjoying each others company while catching fish, and catch fish we did!  Everyone had at least a couple shots at fish, and most I would say put a few in the net.  Fish were  not particularly picky either.  Beetles, ants, stimulators, or anything that floats put in a likely spot would usually get a response.  No huge fish, but with a mountain backdrop you won’t find me complaining.  Here’s a visual.

Family Float on the Milwaukee River

My lady Megan, my son Asher, and myself all took our first family float on our pontoon boats last week down the upper  Milwaukee River.  The weather was great and the float is very easy and safe for beginners and children.   A canoe seat strapped onto the rear rack of the pontoon made a great passenger seat for my son.  With the stripping basket underneath him for a security net I felt more than comfortable taking him down the river.  Two boats can also fish fairly effectively when secured together with one person on the oars and the other casting.  In this case Megan was kind enough to steer the boat while I tossed streamers at the banks probing for smallmouth.  I had a few pike roll on my fly but never got a hook into ’em, and landed half a dozen smallmouth.  Most in the 12 inch range, and one pushing 3 lbs.

Fish Passage Camera on the Milwaukee River

Last fall Adam had told me about a website that had a camera at the Mequon-Theinsville Fishway on the Milwaukee River streaming live video of fish that move through the passage.  They also have photos posted of a variety fish species including chinook salmon, coho salmon, brown trout, steelhead, northern pike, walleye, and  muskie  all that have moved through the fish passage around the Theinsville dam.  Here is the link if you want to see what’s swimming in the Milwaukee River.
