F3T Making a Stop In Milwaukee

This year the fly fishing film tour is making a stop at the Sprecher Brewery on the north side of Milwaukee on April 18.  Timing for this event couldn’t be much better seeing that the spring thaw usually occurs around early to mid march, with steelhead becoming active right after ice-out.  I haven’t seen the Milwaukee River in almost two months, but I’m gonna guess there isn’t much ice this year and fishing should heat up earlier than usual and last through the month of April.  This last fall some friends and I made a stop at the Sprecher Brewery after a day of fishing and took a tour of the brewery followed by some samples of tasty brew.  If you’re not a drinker or you have young ones they offer a wide variety of flavored soda that can also be sampled.  It’s marked on my calender; fishing for steelhead in the morning and an evening of fine fly fishing cinematography and beers.  See ya there!

Big Appetite for a Big Pike!

Just in case you haven’t seen these photos yet, these were taken two years ago on a lake in northern Canada.  This record breaking pike clamped on to a 36 inch pike that had been hooked, and this very lucky angler got the net under both fish!  I just wanted to remind people that there is no shame in fishing for pike.  Some people put these fish in the “garbage fish” category.  Some complain that they’re stupid or easy to catch, but I’ve seen big pike follow and refuse many offerings.  As with most fish the big ones have learned a thing or two along the way and will not be fooled easily.

Anyone got a 36inch pike fly in their box?

“Winter” Steelhead/Brown Trout

My two cousins who happen to be some of my favorite angling buddies are in town from the front range of the rockies for the holiday’s, and it just so happens that the weather has held up quite nice for some good steelhead opportunities in southern Wisconsin while they’re back in town.  Last week we all hit the water with their dad in hopes of finding some of the giant trout that migrate into the Lake Michigan tributaries.  The morning started slow, but after changing locations we found a few fish for everyone to tangle with.  Although it’s almost the new year, it still feels like Thanksgiving.  This warmer than normal winter weather is putting off those dog days of winter for now.  I think until we see the rivers icing up they will be fishing quite well.

Chase is quickly becoming a fan of two-handed rods and their capabilities

Southern Michigan Steelhead

A friend and I floated a river in Michigan last week for the first time and managed to find a couple fish.  Fishing new water is both exciting and challenging.  Not knowing exactly where fish are in the river makes finding them seem more rewarding than returning to your favorite “go to” spots time after time when you know where the fish usually lie.  It was nice to finally find ourselves away from the concrete valley’s of southern Wisconsin and in a semi-wilderness setting searching for steelhead.  It was also nice to get out on my new Creek Company pontoons again.  I had been eyeing these boats for awhile, and I finally caved and bought two in October.  So far, so good.  Dave has had little to no time on the oars and really tested the boats structural integrity.  Small rivers in Michigan usually have many fallen trees and other obstacles to maneuver around, or in Dave’s case bounce off of.  Both Dave and the boat survived.  The first hour of floating we had to share the water with shore anglers and one other drift boat so we didn’t spend much time with our flies in the water.  Once we found some solitude and really started to fish Dave hooked into a fish.  After he felt that unmistakable head shake for a few seconds it was gone.  A couple hours later I was swinging an olive sculpin and a chrome hen smashed it!  I worked the fish to my feet only to  have it shake off while I was digging for my camera.  No fish pics today but with this mild weather there are still opportunities awaiting.

Here’s a few more pics from the last few weeks coming from Southern Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan tributaries.

Bret has been scoring quite well dead drifting egg patterns.

Southeast Wisconsin Tributary Report

I’ve been able to fish southern Wisconsin’s tributaries twice in the last two weeks and things seem to bee improving.  As long as this mild weather holds up so will the fishing.  After the salmon spawn and fade away so does most of the angling pressure.  The absence of salmon in combination with deer season opening up keeps the rivers more or less empty.  When I hit the water last week I saw a lot of browns starting to spawn, but there were still some fresh fish willing to chase a swinging streamer.  I only picked up one steelhead last week , but Dave and I hit the water again yesterday and he landed two steelhead and a nice 7+ lb brown trout drifting eggs, and I took one nice brown swinging a streamer.  After taking a break we returned to the spot where we had success and watched a guy hook about six or seven steelhead in a short amount of time on spawn sacks.  I would say it’s safe to assume the best steelhead fishing will be from now until the river freezes up.

Urban fishing does have a certain charm. Nowhere in Canada would you approach the river and be greeted by a teddy bear in a lawn chair.
