Intruder Alert

Posted by on November 13, 2013

This is a flexible pattern that’s intended for Steelhead but it works for all of our lake run fish.  Intruder style flies are designed to create a large profile with minimum materials.  The takes on this style of fly can be electrifying and it swims like a champ.  They don’t look like food but their spider like profile and movement create a territorial type of strike.  I can’t wait to start experimenting with spinning ostrich herl and lady amherst in a dubbing loop for this style of fly.  Also, if you spin some deer hair before palmering marabou or spinning composite hackle it makes a great back stop to help the longer materials create a larger profile and keep them from collapsing.

The beads are optional but I think they give the fly an extra boost and it keeps the hook from fouling

Tie in some black estaz, add a bit more flash, then palmer more marabou

Tie in some black estaz and give it about 8 turns, add a bit more flash, then palmer more marabou

Remove guinea barbs from one side of the feather and palmer

Remove guinea barbs from one side of the feather and palmer.  This is where I sometimes stop the pattern, don’t bother with the stinger, use bead chain eyes and wrap eyes with dubbing of choice.

Tie in about a dozen Ostrich herls
