Early Trout Season Preparations

With trout season rapidly approaching there are a couple things in particular that come to mind; black stone flies and big streamers.  I’ve yet to capitalize on the early season stone fly hatch, but I have seen them crawling around on snowy banks near riffles on more than one occasion.  Now prepared with a few new patterns I will dedicate more time to find some rising fish this march.

For this one I used a small piece of foam packing wrap to make a buoyant and fairly visible wing. Having the foam wing combined with deer hair legs I believe it should float well without hackle.

This simple pattern came from an old American Angler Magazine. Black dubbing, white e.p. wing, and grizzly hackle make for a nice high riding stone fly. The author prefers sizing up the hackle to make waking and skittering the fly easier.

My other main focus this spring with be with medium to large streamers searching for some heavy weight contenders.  While 20+ inch fish aren’t as common in small spring creeks as they can be on some large tailwaters, you can narrow down your chances by throwing flies that will provoke strikes from the real PREDATORS!

When this fly came off the vise it looked like it belonged in my musky box rather than my trout streamer box, but I’m optimistic that I’ll get some pigs to take a closer look at this one.

Double zoo cougar. Deer hair heads on jointed flies make for some KILLER ACTION! More like a jointed rapala than a fly.

New Pike/Bass Flies

Sorry for the lack of posts lately.  Holidays have been keeping me busy with family parties, which was really nice to have some fun with a lot of family that I don’t see nearly enough.  Normally for me by mid January winter starts to feel like a case of the “mondays” and I start counting down the weeks until the ice melts, the grass turns green, and mayflies start hatching in southwest Wisconsin.  Although not much fishing for me lately I have been getting some tying done.  I’ve been working mostly on bait fish patterns and deer hair diving flies for warmwater species and here’s what I’ve come up with.

These mono “weed” guards are just stiff enough for allowing your fly to roll over logs, or bounce along a rocky bottom without snagging up.

Birthday Trouty in Colorado

Brittany and I went on a little road trip for my Birthday.  Our friends Stew and Sarah were nice enough to let us crash their spare bedroom in Glenwood Springs, CO.  Glenwood is the hub of outdoor adventure with the Roaring Fork, Eagle, Colorado,  Frying Pan, and Crystal River all within a short drive.  We fished the Colorado from shore and found a nice pod of fish right away.   I hooked up on my first cast while giving an example for Stew on how to get a good drift.  These fish fought like an Irishman at last call.

The Colorado River

Brittany and I continued west the next morning to fish the White River.  I am hesitant to blog about the White River because it is one of those places that would normally benefit from keeping it quiet from tourists.  But, the White River National Forest and our public BLM lands are being enticed by the sale of mineral rights.  There is a BLM draft Resource Management Plan Amendment in progress that will help energy developers move into the area to create quick profits with little environmental concerns.

Now, I know there are good engineers out there extracting oil and gas in a responsible way, they come into the Orvis shop in Boulder to buy fly fishing gear.  Most oil workers want to keep the environment clean, but they are employed to make money, not to fish.  If oil company employees were in business to help protect fish, they would use their resources to draft  detailed agreements with the BLM that ultimetely reduces corporate profits to ensure our public land and waterways remain clean.

Take Action and email Heather at the BLM office:  [email protected]

I sent a letter to Heather voicing my concern as a fisherman that enjoys wilderness, fresh clean water, and wild native fish.  I ask you do the same, even if you’ve never heard of the White River in Colorado.

…Our adventure continued as we fished the White River for two days.  Here are the highlights from our fishing trip:
