Bolster the Coaster

Thinking about hitting the UP in the Spring so I’ve been reading up on Lake Run Brook Trout aka Coasters.  There really doesn’t seem to be a solid fishery anywhere for them in Michigan or Wisconsin but Canada and Minnesota have had some success.  Targeting them seems futile but it’s still nice knowing they can be a bonus fish.  That being said, I was happy to stumble onto this Michigan DNR article.  I also found a video on YouTube which highlights one of the reasons for their decline.  In the video you can see a pod of Brookies laying  next to sand which is now covering what used to be great spawning gravel.  Michigan Technological University made this video a few years ago to illustrate why money was needed to vacuum sand from essential spawning habitat for these beautiful native trout.

Fly Tying – Articulated Streamer

I still don’t have all the materials to tie the D&D correctly, but it has been inspiring me to tie some big articulated stuff with many of the same characteristics.  Here is a time lapse of my latest spin-off of the D&D.

Les and Deaner Go Fishing

I heard a rumor a while back about Claypool and Dean Ween doing a fishing show together.  If this ever becomes reality it surely will be some good entertainment.  Here’s what Claypool said in the last interview with Rolling Stone about the project.

Let’s talk about that fishing show.
Well, we got some financing from some friends, and went down to Florida and shot a bunch of footage. Unfortunately, didn’t catch a lot of fish, but got a lot of good footage of us attempting to catch fish. Men on the hunt. So then we shot some more footage in New Hope Pa., where we did catch a bunch of fish, which is near his house. Then he was at my place a couple of months ago, and we got incredibly drunk the night before and he actually continued on and got even more drunk with our cameraman. So we went out to fish the next day, and pretty much everybody just slept on the boat, while one guy was vomiting. So, no fish on that one either. We started off with this 30-minute episode, and we whittled it down to a five-minute piece. We’re talking to production houses, and we’re starting to take meetings, so we’ll see what happens.

Does the show have a title?
Right now we’re calling it Musishermen. And we have a great theme song – it’s exactly what you would think a hybrid of Primus and Ween would be.

Facebrookie

We were a little hesitant about getting involved in social media but considering the day and age we live in, it seems FB is a necessary evil to get to the masses.  We now have a  Trouterspace FB page which will contain pics, links, and short thoughts, as well as notifications on our latest blog posts which will continue to focus on larger write-ups and fishing outings.

Drunk and Disorderly Streamer Video

I’ve been waiting a while for this one.  I’ve seen this streamer hanging out of more huge brown trout faces than many others combined.  Deer hair heads have always had a irresistible diving and side to side action when stripped erratically.  Adding a bunch of flash, a rattle, and articulation never hurts.  See The Fish Whisperer himself giving a demo on this awesome streamer.

Boca Grande Tarpon Jig Update

Ever since the arctic weather front has hit the Chicago area I’ve been thinking more and more about visiting my dad in southwest Florida.  While dreaming of Florida tarpon always come to mind.  The spring of 2013 I made a post about the controversy of the Boca Grande tarpon jig that was being used in many profitable tarpon tournaments.  The “jig” was outlawed the next year by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission with majority vote saying it is indeed a snagging device.  With tarpon on my mind I decided to check out what’s been happening down in Boca Grande with the jiggers, because everybody knew they were gonna try to find a loop hole in the new regulations.  Sure enough they made a slight adjustment to the old jig that almost worked, but they failed again, and charter captains are getting charged for using them with innocent clients that don’t know the rules.  Nothing bothers me more than a guide who’s sole purpose is to put their client on fish.  Yes, that’s there job, but more so there job should be to teach people proper technique.  The best guides are usually the best teachers.  If they are good at teaching you how to be successful than you will be.  Guides who can’t teach will do whatever it takes to get their customers on fish.  Even if it bends the rules.  I see this in the midwest with salmon and steelhead guides that give there clients “chuck and duck” rigs and make them believe they are fly fishing.  If you’re not fly casting you’re not fly fishing.  More good info on this topic can be found at Save The Tarpon.

Here’s a video of how the new jig easily becomes the old jig.
